WCCS Patriots Win Home Opener

Selma, Al. — Wallace Community College Selma basketball teams won their home openers on Saturday night. The Lady Patriots defeated Snead State Community College 74-61 and the men avenged their loss to Snead on Nov. 11 with a 76-61 victory.

The Patriots (1-2) had 8 different players score while shooting 57 percent from the field. The Patriots also out rebounded Snead State 48-24. Douglas Murray, Deon President, and Tray Williams led the Patriots with 14 points each. President also added 15 rebounds to the winning effort.

"We played a balanced game and we eliminated a lot of unnecessary turnovers," Patriots head coach Johnnie McCalpine said. "If we continue to play like this, we have a chance to compete."

The Lady Patriots (3-2) had 10 different players score while hitting 44 percent of their shots from the field. Freshman Vinecia Dudley led all scorers with 17 points, and sophomore Shaerica Wilkins added 14 points to the effort. Ebony Jones finished with 8 points and 8 rebounds while sophomores Kimberly Broadnax and Michelle Keith finished with 10 rebounds each. Sophomore Michelle Cottrell finished with 7-points and 8 assists.

The Patriots will travel to Tuscaloosa to compete in the Shelton State Tournament on Nov. 20 – 21. The Lady Patriots will resume play on Dec. 2 when both teams travel to Lawson State Community College in Birmingham, AL. After that game, both teams play host Wallace State-Hanceville on Dec. 9 and Lawson State on Dec. 11.
