WCCS ACE Competition Serves as Incentive for Local Students

Posted on: May 4, 2012

A common concern in Selma, Dallas County, and across the state of Alabama is about quality in education. Educators and parents work, worry, and talk constantly about ways to educationally prepare our children for the 21st century. Most people agree that the use of positive rewards and recognition helps students achieve excellence.

Wallace Community College Selma once again conducted just such a reward program last week in hosting its annual Academic Challenge for Excellence (ACE) on Friday, April 20, 2012. The purpose of ACE is to encourage academic excellence, provide an academic challenge to students, and to recognize students, teachers and schools that surpass the ordinary in academic and technical performance. WCCS honors ACE competitors with trophies, plaques, medallions and ACE T-shirts. First place technical competition winners are eligible for scholarships.

This year WCCS hosted more than 625 high school students from 23 area high schools across Alabama. What is really exciting about the ACE Competition is that while it includes college academic skills such as computer science, English language, mathematics, natural sciences, social studies and public speaking, it also allows those students whose talents are more technically inclined to show their skills. Technical students competed in business education, cosmetology, drafting, electrical technology and commercial wiring, health occupations, masonry, welding, and industrial maintenance technology. Through the WCCS WIRED partnership, an entrepreneurial competition was added to the ACE competition.
