Posted on: August 17, 2006

Selma, Al. — Wallace Community College Selma has recently been awarded a federally funded Talent Search grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The approved grant application was funded for 4 years at $324,646 yearly. This grant is designed to assist students in grades 6-12 and out-of-school students in the completion of their secondary or post-secondary education. The service area includes targeted schools in the Selma City, Dallas, and Perry County School Systems.

In addition to counseling, participants receive information about college admissions requirements, scholarships, and various student financial aid programs. Students also receive tutorial assistance and participate in career/motivational workshops and field trips. The Talent Search Program also has a dropout reduction program that provides counseling to high school and post-secondary dropouts to help them get back into school or into a GED preparatory program. Over 384,588 Americans are enrolled in 468 Talent Search TRIO programs. WCCS serves 926 in our Talent Search program.

The Wallace Community College Selma's Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) Program was funded in August, 2005, for five years in the amount of $160,000 yearly with matching funds to serve 200 seventh graders in the Perry County School System. GEAR UP is a federally funded program created to help sixth through twelfth graders prepare for college. GEAR UP prepares young people and their families for all aspects of college: academic, financial and social. Wallace Community College Selma's GEAR UP Program is in partnership with the Perry County School System. Dr. James M. Mitchell, president of WCCS said, "These two programs help ensure that we are increasing the number of students going to college and being successful."
