Selma Early College High School faring well on WCCS Campus

Posted on: September 29, 2006

Selma, Al. — It's 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Ninth-graders India Gray, Derrick Platt, and a handful of other Selma Early College High School students have just come out of Ms. Ross' English classroom at Wallace Community College Selma. At the same time, in another classroom, tenth grader Chelsea Martinear is settling in for her Math 112 Pre-calculus class. And across campus, 11th graders Jamie Anderson and Tim Purdie are in the computer lab completing assignments for their internet Political Science class. Under other circumstances, India, Derrick, Chelsea, Jamie, and Tim would be at Selma High School on Wednesday morning. Instead, they are among 171 students at Selma Early College High School preparing to earn college credit in WCCS classes.

"I'm missing the high school experience, but the smaller class sizes allow more one on one time with the teachers," India said. "I like the program because there are fewer distractions, and it will help make the transition to college easier," said Derrick.

As Selma ECHS winds down its seventh week on the WCCS campus, students and administrators alike agree that the program, while experiencing its share of bumps, is accomplishing what it set out to do
