Dr. Cornel West speaks at Wallace Community College Selma

Posted on: March 13, 2008

SELMA — On Friday, March 7 at 7 p.m., Dr. Cornel West, one of the nation’s most provocative public intellectuals, lectured before a crowd of over 800. The event was free and open to the public.

West, a theologian, author, activist and professor of religion at Princeton University, was welcomed onto the stage with a standing ovation. West is the author of more than a dozen books, including Prophesy Deliverance: An Afro-American Revolutionary Christianity; Prophetic Fragments: Illuminations of the Crisis in American Religion and Culture; Race Matters; and, his most recent volume, Democracy Matters: Winning the Fight Against Imperialism.

“We were quite pleased and honored to have Dr. West on our campus. He is an intellectual giant and judging from the crowd’s response, he and his message were well received,” said WCCS president Dr. James. M. Mitchell.

West appeared in conjunction with the 15th Annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee and the 43rd Commemoration of “Bloody Sunday.”
